What’s So Bad About Lady Gaga’s “Judas”?

Lady Gaga generates controversy with "Judas."Filipinos love drama. The past few days have been full of them so far. The Chief Justice of our Supreme Court walked out of his own impeachment trial after a lengthy and pompous speech. The 16-year-old Fil-Am diva Jessica Sanchez did not win American Idol Season 11.

And then there’s the two-night Manila stop of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Ball, completely sold out amidst protests from various Christian groups and the Philippine Catholic Church itself.

Apparently, one of the reasons why these religious groups raised a huge stink against Gaga has something to do with the song “Judas.” These people claimed the song’s lyrics are “blasphemous” and “immoral.”

Well, people are entitled to their own opinions on the whole Lady Gaga debacle, and here are mine.

  • I get how Christians can interpret this song as blasphemous, what with its images of the song’s narrator wanting to have sex with Judas and being unable to cling to her “virtue,” Jesus. But it’s too literal an interpretation. The way I see it, the song tells the story of a woman who is in a relationship with a good man but couldn’t let go of a man she had loved who repeatedly broke her heart. Poisonous relationships like that do exist out there.
  • A person’s sense of morality is like a wall. If it’s strong enough, no amount of immoral messages can penetrate and corrupt it and in the end topple it. The only time we’d have a problem is if the wall is weak.
  • We’re all born with free will, and as such, we should be responsible enough to learn how to use it wisely. Find the facts behind every issue and learn to draw your own opinion from these facts. There’s nothing worse than believing in something just because someone told you that is what you should believe in.

I’m not a rabid Lady Gaga fan. In fact, I don’t even consider myself a fan. But I like some of her songs, and “Judas” is one of them. Do I consider my morality in danger? Do I blaspheme when I attempt to sing the song when I shower? I don’t think so.

These are my two cents on the “Judas” drama. What’s yours?
