Serious Freelance Writers Should Have Their Own Blog

Freelance writers should have their own blog. The title pretty much says it all. If you are a freelance writer who is serious about building his or her own name in the field, you’ve got to have your own blog. There is something uplifting about having your own blog, and blogging gives you certain advantages.

Among these advantages are:

1. A blog gives you a chance to create samples of your writing. Clients will always ask you to provide samples of your writing before they hire you. If you have a blog, you can just give your prospective clients a link to your blog. This saves you time and effort of creating new samples unless the client specifically asks for them.

2. A blog gives your prospective clients a glimpse of the kind of person you are. Some clients are interested in knowing whom they are hiring. You can use your blog to write about things that interest you. Letting your clients know that you are passionate about some things can pay off somehow. It worked for me when I told a client I used to play online games a lot; he gave me an assignment that focused on online gaming.

3. A blog is a tool for practicing your writing. You can’t be a good writer if you don’t practice your craft. I’ve read somewhere that you have to write a thousand words every single day just to keep your writing sharp and in good shape. I know that if I let a single day pass by without writing anything, I feel a bit rusty the next day I write.

4. A blog can generate you some passive income. Earning your bread and butter as a freelance writer can be tough. But if you have a blog, you can use it to earn some money through ads, promoting affiliate products, among others. Eventually, you can use your blog as your launch pad for writing for yourself.

If you are serious about building a career as a freelance writer, one thing you need to have is your own blog. You’ll be more attractive to clients, you’ll have opportunities to practice your writing, and the blog will help you earn money on the side as well.

Agree!!!! When I’m ready, I would very much love to have my own personal domain even if it will only start as a hobby. I most of my writing out of passion but then again, when my mood warrants. Love you blog Anna. Glad, I bumped into you again, though every now and then, I do think of you especially when I went home last year. Well, am going back there again this year, God willing.
